Introduction
Sometimes I think back and try to figure out when I got Diabetes, and if I had any signs. I remember in my late 20s going out for drinks with my friends and having to go to the bathroom every two minutes, and the bartender asking my friends what the hell was wrong with me. My routine in my early 30s was stopping at the gas station after work and grab a donut, and then taking a nap at home. Some of my co-workers would kid around with me and say time for your nap. I never thought to much about it, I always thought it was normal for most people to take a little nap after work. I also had problems seeing my computer monitor. Just before going to the doctor I told a friend with Diabetes about my symptoms, so he checked me with his meter, and my sugar level was 400 mg/dl, normal is approximately 80 mg/dl, I knew I was in trouble then. The next step was to find out if I was type 1 or 2. The doctor started me on type 2 medication hoping that I was, but no luck I was type 1, and had to go on insulin.
As far as I know I have had type 1 Diabetes for about 25 years and I feel very healthy at the age of 58, and out of those 25 years I have not always been happy with the way I took care of my Diabetes. If you have Diabetes you know how difficult it is to keep under control, one moment your levels are high, the next moment your low. It starts to wear on your mental and physical health, and to be honest there is no easy way around Diabetes, it's an everyday fight. Most Diabetics are uncomfortable to show their numbers, it's like stepping on a scale. Some push it to the side, but in the back of their minds they know it's there and they need to deal with it. Keeping a routine, eating right, taking medication, monitoring, and exercise can keep a Diabetic healthy.
